Is it hard to improve if you start competitive swimming late?
I’m 19 and joined a masters team 6 months ago. I was a beginning swimmer at the time, but right now I’m still unable to go more than 50 meters without stopping unless I have fins on. It’s very dissatisfying to not be able to go further than that.
And I have to depend on my fins if I want to complete the workouts.
The problem is that it takes me forever to just get across one lap. My coaches have worked with me on my technique, but I still do not find much improvement. Do I need more time to improve or am I just kidding myself in trying to become a swimmer? (Everyone on the team started swimming when they were in elementary school, and many have swam in college)
its never to late you will get the hang of it you just have to be patient!! everyone hits a wall just fight through it!!! keep swimming!!! =D
go to the pool on your own is my best advice. if you are paying for the team you are on now, drop it and work on your own until you feel comfortable with where you are. maybe start with backstroke to get some more distance in and then when you are going longer distance then switch to freestyle. also maybe you aren’t breathing right or enough. just breathing more often and every third stroke. also when breathing blow out all your air under water before breathing again this will make sure you get the most air out of each breath. lastly possibly find a private swim coach who can help you one on one until you can full get going on your own. good luck! stick with it!!! it is a truly amazing sport to be in
yes it is hard, if you are going to join a swim team and your 19 and cant swim 50 meters without fins then that wont be good
i’m 13 and me and my friends have to practice around 1hour-2hours everyday
so to tell you the truth dont join a swim team, but dont let that discourage you from getting lessons elsewhere or from swimming
yeha it is very hard, i started late about 15, i was determined to be good, so i trained and trained and trained, and eventually got upto national level, and i competed in the berlin nationals, so yeah go for it
if ure determined enougfh ul be fine!
Practice often and try your best. Try eating the correct foods.
At the moment your using your fins to help you swim. Although fins do need you to move your legs and arms, you don’t have to use them much. Unfortunately, your not aloud fins at galas. As you are unable to swim more than 50m without your fins I suggest that you don’t use your fins all the time but try using your pullbuoy to help strengthen your arms and kick board for your legs. After all, you need strong arms and legs for swimming. Stamina builds with time and hard effort but If you try hard enough you’ll get it.
Remember- swimming is one of the hardest sports out there. I’ve been swimming since the age of 5 and began competitive swimming at 9. I got pushed into it from a young age and loved it at first. The trophies and medals and galas were amazing and I thought swimming was everything. It wasn’t. Slowly I began to hate all the intense training I used to love. I carried on because I didn’t want to disappoint everyone. Eventually I became depressed. I have now quit and am happy.
Swim because you enjoy it. If your determined you can do it, just don’t give up on yourself
It’s important to not get discouraged. As long as you truly are working towards improvement, and not psyching yourself out, than you will improve. As a beginner, you have a wonderful opportunity to drop great amounts of time, whereas the rest of your team will probably only be able to drop less than a second every once in a while. Just keep working on your technique and work on pushing yourself.
swimming is sometimes just for fun. now, 50 meters is a breeze for me and i am 11. but its dif cuz i have been swiming since i was like 1.
just try to go farther. test it out.
